The PoArtMo Anthology Series: Focus on David Ellis

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our PoArtMo Anthology Series, which celebrates the artists whose work appears in The Auroras & Blossoms PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 5.

Today’s guest is David Ellis, co-founder of Auroras & Blossoms, who has contributed a very unique set of poems. He explains what has inspired his creative journey for the pieces he has included in the anthology.

For this anthology, I wanted to provide a variety of found poetry creations that showcase all of the different places that you can find deep insight when looking for ways to motivate your muse. In this case, I have been influenced by catchy songs, other incredible poems, non-fiction literature and sumptuous photography/paintings.

Found poetry is a very rich passion of mine, I seem to be able to unearth endless permutations when playing around with the format. It is truly fascinating how it helps me to craft poetry in such a way that I would not have originally thought of, if I had written freeform poetry. There is something about being restricted with word choice and word placement that stimulates my brain, it generates a puzzle that must be solved! Having to think of innovative ways to phrase something that uses the resources available, along with it sounding nothing like the source material and having it make sense too is truly thrilling to me when I manage to finish the piece.

When it comes to subject matter, this is uncovered to me a bit like I am an archeologist. I start off trying to find the corners, along with the beginning, middle and end. Sometimes the pieces can be back to front or in the wrong place/order, so I gently fiddle with them until they fit better as a whole. Then the rest reveals itself piece by piece until I am completely satisfied that I have uncovered all of its secrets buried within.

My two longest poetry pieces in the anthology originally started out as attempts at “Cadralore” poetry (for more information on this wonderful and intricate form, check out GLEAM: Journal of the Cadralor). I mention this because although I was not successful this time in writing Cadralore poems (the plural of Cadralor), it still resulted in poems that to me feel extremely unique in the way they were crafted and I think the sentiment in them still shines through to the reader.

I would encourage fellow writers to be fearless when trying new ways to write/create because you never know what you will end up with, even if it does not come out exactly as you originally planned, you too could end up with something special for your audience!

The PoArtMo Anthology Series: Interview with David Ellis

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our PoArtMo Anthology Series, which celebrates the artists whose work appears in The Auroras & Blossoms PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 4.

Today’s guest is David Ellis, who is a co-founder of Auroras & Blossoms. He contributed several poems to our anthology.

Auroras & Blossoms: Tell us all about the inspiration behind your pieces.

David Ellis: My inspiration comes from many diverse sources. I try to keep a very open mind. I can be motivated by lots of things at once, providing that I have some prompt ideas and access to the internet! As this is now the fourth volume of our PoArtMo Anthology, it is important for us to keep the material fresh, different and vibrant each time we collaborate with artists on this project.

Cendrine & I work on so many varied collaborative projects together, we usually have an abundance of conceptual ideas that can all co-exist at the same time, which then helps us to compile some of these ideas into exciting collections.

The ‘Vardhakus’ that I have written for this volume were influenced by Cendrine’s autumnal poems. We used winter/water as key themes and therefore were a considerable influence on each other, so they dovetail very nicely in this collection. Cendrine co-created this amazing form herself with another fellow writer, we heartily encourage people to attempt it themselves!

I also attempted my first ‘Sepigram’ poem (which was solely created by Cendrine) and merged it with my Greek heritage, selecting a fairy tale as my ultimate form of inspiration for the piece. I enjoy exploring poetic forms with mathematical structures and combining/inserting words into them, it is like solving a literary puzzle piece by piece.

Finally, my found poetry pieces (blackout poetry/found poetry is a speciality and passion of mine) were inspired by the poems of Toni Morrison, a very remarkable lady full of integrity. While she did not write much poetry in her lifetime, her poems are all very moving in the extreme and she leaves a strong literary legacy in her wake as well. I hope that the sincerity of my own poems do her justice and honour her memory.

A&B: How does a poem, story or creative piece of art begin for you? Does it start with an image, a form or a particular theme?

DE: I would say that usually a poem begins for me with a particular theme. I will then look to explore a form for that theme and attach an image later that coyly describes what the poem is going to be about. I do this as I do not want to give everything away from the image or title, as to be too literal with it could rob the poem of any mystery/romance/intrigue. You want the reader to use their imagination when they encounter your work to make it a more interesting experience for them.

However, in the past I have experimented with new forms that are unfamiliar to me, which in turn I will then apply a theme to them. This has definitely been the case when I have been trying out Cendrine poetry forms, in order to master them.

If I choose to write a poem based on an image, I will try to imagine a story that the image evokes to then give me a framework to enable me to write a themed poem about it.

All three choices are valid creative paths, so you might as well pick the one at the time that suits your creative mood the most and run with it.

A&B: What is your own artistic background?

DE: I am primarily a writer of found poetry with several books to my name that have been published. I am also the co-founder and co-editor of Auroras & Blossoms with Cendrine Marrouat. We have over thirty publications to date spanning anthologies, marketing guides, journals and creative prompt books to name a few.

A&B: Does your work have any specific themes or social commentary we should identify with?

DE: My pieces are constantly filled with positivity, romance, self-confidence boosting and stimulation of profound thought. I will always be a champion of the underdog and you will find that my themes celebrate the triumph of beating adversity, along with treating people with respect, love and kindness wherever possible.

A&B: Tell us the most positive and uplifting advice you have been given while working as a creative person.

DE: For me I think the most important piece of advice I have been given from multiple people is it to write to identify with others, to connect with people and explore similar emotions. I have learnt to appreciate hard work and perseverance throughout my lifetime but especially through my collaborations with Cendrine, as she is one of the hardest working artists I have ever found in my lifetime!

I write with a very clear purpose and an audience in mind. I want to help, encourage, motivate, stimulate, inform, enchant, thrill, prompt and transcend. I want to make people fall in love with the written word, to let the euphoria take them to places they could only dream of and to get people achieving their literary goals. We are a community of like-minded individuals and we should always strive to what is best for each other.

Contributors Pick Their Favorite Pieces from ‘The PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 3’ (3)

Hello everybody!

Welcome to our mini-series, in which contributors to The PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 3 tell us about their favorite pieces from the book.

Today, we focus on my own picks from the anthology.

David’s Favorite Picks from Other Contributors

“Coffee & Baseball” (Meaghan Beatty)

I chose this particular piece of Meaghan’s because of the resonance that it has within me. My father had Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease towards the end of his life, coupled with his other disabilities of blindness, partial deafness and mobility issues, which made things very difficult for him on a daily basis when he was diagnosed a few years ago. He finally passed away midway through last year.

When reading Meghan’s story, it evoked memories and feelings about my father in natural ways that allowed me to reminisce of the good old times that we shared together, be it through good food/drink, fondness of music (which would always elevate his mode significantly) and thoughtful conversation with each other. It also helped remind me that there are other people who have had similar experiences and that we are not alone in having to deal with family trauma or having loved ones succumb to the ravages of diseases.

Coffee & Baseball is a sweet, heart-warming tale about making the most of what you have got with the time you have left. It is beautifully poignant, sincere, evocative and very well written.

Sepigram: “From the Sea” (Cendrine Marrouat)

The sepigram is a very unique poetry form invented by Cendrine. In her poem “From the Sea”, she shows how deftly the rhythmic flow of the form can be used to create a passionate piece that visually builds in lyrical intensity to complement the nature of the words themselves.

This poem speaks volumes to me, I can imagine it being sung out loud, each refrain more powerful than the last. There is exuberance, sensual wisdom, explosions of fizzy textures, bold, illustrious magnificence that truly is as captivating as the very sea itself.

Definitely a piece to savour multiple times, it gets better with each passing, another impressive poetic gem that sits like one of the biggest jewels in the crown of this collection.

David’s Backstory about His Own Favorite Contribution: Kindku: “Wonderfully Wild Renewal”

I have several pieces in the anthology but this is the one that really jumps out to me for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it utilises the Kindku form that Cendrine & I co-invented. You can find out more about our forms here.

Secondly, I wanted to imbue this piece as a celebration of giddy summer warmth, joy, happiness and freedom or liberation from the stresses of our everyday lives.

Its message is simple in nature and stature but one that we should be constantly mindful of, if we are to maintain our own healthy sense of wellbeing.

‘Rhythm Flourishing: A Collection of Kindku and Sixku’ now available in print!

Hello everyone!

When we released Rhythm Flourishing: A Collection of Kindku and Sixku last year, many of you asked if there would ever be a print version.

At the time, we said no. The reason was simple: Books featuring visual content are very expensive to print and (hence) to sell.

Some of you mentioned that you really wanted to own a physical copy of that book—no matter the price involved. As a result, we did some research and found out that Blurb, the POD that Cendrine uses for her photography collections, actually offers a (much) cheaper option than coffee table books.

So here we are! Rhythm Flourishing: A Collection of Kindku and Sixku is now available in print (softcover / hardcover) and as an ebook!

Reviews

“It is amazing how, in just a few lines, Marrouat and Ellis manage to describe their inner worlds, hidden realities, complex emotions, literary inspirations and aspirations all at once, while successfully connecting those vital pieces of their life/poetical fabric into a meaningful whole and leaving the reader feeling uplifted.” – Ana Savković (ZiN Daily)

“This delectable concoction of Haiku-inspired poetry forms- Sixku & Kindku, ticks all the aesthetic boxes. It’s always a challenge to express oneself succinctly, but this instructive & picturesque book has achieved precisely that. For lovers of poetry in all its forms, this book is delightfully designed with poems interspersed with scenic photographs by one of the co-authors Cendrine Marrouat herself.” – Grasshopper Bot

“Cendrine Marrouat and David Ellis inspire and sooth in their brand new type of poetry book Rhythm Flourishing! This book introduces two new poetry types developed by the authors: the Kindku and the Sixku. The Kindku has a syllable scheme similar to Japanese poetry and explores positive messages while the Sixku is more of a visual poetry style. It is so much fun exploring a new type of poetry (with a super catchy rhythm) and I loved the overwhelming positivity of the poems in this book! Poet or non, come find some inspiration and joy in the upbeat musings of Marrouat and Ellis!” – Joshua Grant

“We all need a bit of positivity in our life, and this beautiful collection of poetry and photography has it in spades.” – Ritu Bhathal
