The PoArtMo Anthology Series: Focus on Cendrine Marrouat

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our PoArtMo Anthology Series, which celebrates the artists whose work appears in The Auroras & Blossoms PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 5.

Today’s guest is Cendrine Marrouat, co-founder of Auroras & Blossoms, who has contributed a very unique set of poems. She explains what inspired her pieces.

Those who know me are aware that I love challenging myself as an artist. I believe that it is one of the most effective ways of getting rid of writer’s block.

Over the years, I have created several poetry forms, which are all inspired by the Haiku: the Hemingku, Kindku, Pareiku, Sixku, Sepigram, and Vardhaku. (Three of them have also involved David Ellis.) I invented my own type of flash fiction, called the Flashku, too. So, I wanted to share a few examples of those in this year’s volume, as well as a short story that reinvents the myth behind sunsets and sunrises.

I have been passionate about the Haiku for two decades. Its minimalistic approach makes it a very challenging form to master. I also consider it one of the greatest poetry forms ever created. To be impactful, the Haiku requires a deep dive into the exploration of one’s emotions. It is not something I have experienced with other forms—at least not as strongly.

That is exactly what the forms I (co-)created are all about.

Whenever I start working on a piece, I want to do more than just entertain readers. My biggest goal is to inspire them to sit and think about the world around them, and (re-)learn to enjoy the little things.

Of course, not everyone will relate to my message. But writing from a place of self-worth and self-understanding has helped me remain grounded. I would not be the artist and person I am today without it.

The PoArtMo Anthology Series: Interview with Cendrine Marrouat

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our PoArtMo Anthology Series, which celebrates the artists whose work appears in The Auroras & Blossoms PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 4.

Today’s guest is Cendrine Marrouat, who is a co-founder of Auroras & Blossoms. She contributed several poems and flashku to our anthology.

Auroras & Blossoms: Tell us all about the inspiration behind your pieces.

Cendrine Marrouat: My goal has always been to inspire whoever reads me or looks at my visual art. To me, being an artist transcends creation. I want to share important life lessons so others are encouraged to question their own outlook.

All the vardhaku in this volume come from an unfinished project based on nature and the seasons. My other poems talk about the importance of self-love. Finally, my flashku, which are short forms of flash fiction inspired by images, freeze a moment in time in order to deliver a stirring message.

A&B: How does a poem, story or creative piece of art begin for you? Does it start with an image, a form or a particular theme?

CM: As a multidisciplinary artist, I find this question difficult to answer. When I take photos, I hear words in my mind. When I write, I see images. And when I paint or work on a digital piece, it is a mixture of both.

The only constant in my artistic life has been the need for finding a title before starting any project.

A&B: What is your own artistic background?

CM: English is not my mother tongue, but I am a former English major. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in English-to-French translation. My linguistic training has played a major role in shaping my style and teaching me how to write in an impactful manner.

However, when it comes to photography, digital art, and painting, I am completely self-taught. I watch tutorials and ask questions, but mostly learn through practice. I love going with the flow!

A&B: Does your work have any specific themes or social commentary we should identify with?

CM: As a writer who seeks to inspire people, the recurrent themes in my work revolve around the importance of self-love and mental well-being. I have released several books that deal with topics like death, suicide, and depression. I want to normalize challenging conversations.

My photography and paintings mostly focus on nature and details that we tend to overlook. Finally, my work with fractals is geared towards our connection with the universe.

A&B: Tell us the most positive and uplifting advice you have been given while working as a creative person.

CM: “Welcome imperfections and embrace mistakes” and “If you do your absolute best, you will never fail”. 🙂

Contributors Pick Their Favorite Pieces from ‘The PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 3’ (4)

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our mini-series, in which contributors to The PoArtMo Anthology: Volume 3 tell us about their favorite pieces from the book.

Today, we focus on Cendrine Marrouat’s picks.

Cendrine’s Favorite Picks from Other Contributors

“Sleep” (Azelle Elric)

I have been a fan of Azelle’s work for many years. Looking at her drawings always puts me in a good mood.

“Sleep” was a ‘love at first sight’ kind of experience for me. Its ethereal, dream-like quality reminds me of my favorite painting by Eugène Carrière — one of the most unique French artists of the 19th century.

If there is one drawing Azelle should be remembered for, it is this one. I consider it a masterpiece.

Drive-Thru Dog” (Meaghan Beatty)

“Drive-Thru Dog” was the first entry I read from Meaghan. I was hooked from the first line.

There is a lot to like about this story, but my favorite elements are its simplicity and minimalism. No long-winded descriptions, just a short series of moments leading to the happy conclusion.

“Drive-Thru Dog” would make a great prologue to a novel.

Cendrine’s Backstory about Her Own Favorite Contribution: “Pareiku: Here and There”

I am one of the slowest writers on the face of the earth. It usually takes me an inordinate amount of time to pen a poem. Once in a while though, something clicks in my brain. The words align on the page without any effort on my part.

“Here and There” wrote itself in a unique way. The second line came first, followed by the first line. I only picked the two images when it was time to work on the last part. I never get tired of reading it!

For those who don’t know what the Pareiku is, here is more information here.

Announcement: Cendrine Has a New Book Out!

Hello, folks!

We are thrilled to announce the release of Cendrine’s latest book: In Her Own Words: A Collection of Short Stories and Flashku. This is our co-founder’s first full collection of fiction.

In Her Own Words features eight contemporary stories told from the point of view of women at different stages in their lives. For those who have followed Cendrine’s career for a while, this release will come as a surprise. She tells us why she went into fiction mode instead of continuing to solely focus on poetry and/or photography in the introduction to the book:

The year 2007 marked my first attempt at doing something different from poetry. I wrote a play, titled In the Silence of Words.

The completion of that project made me realize that I wanted to be more than just a poet. I wanted to write fiction, especially short stories. So, I set out to do exactly that.

My initial excitement slowly gave way to frustration, though. As a perfectionist who reads a lot of classics, I noticed a major shortcoming in my style. Unlike my favorite authors, I had an uncanny inability to write descriptions. That inability bothered me to the point of stifling my creativity.

I returned to poetry a little disappointed but also hopeful. I knew from experience that I might have looked at things the wrong way. It would take me 14 years to finally realize what that wrong way was.

After the release of After the Fires of Day: Haiku Inspired by Kahlil Gibran & Alphonse de Lamartine in 2021, I started thinking about short stories again. My rich experience with photography and content creation had broadened my horizons, leading to a noticeable change in my writing style. Also, my work as an anthology editor had put me in contact with a variety of excellent writers, some of whom specialized in flash fiction. The genre was intriguing and seemed to fit my style better than short stories.

While writing my first piece of flash fiction, I realized that I followed the same pattern as for my play. Dialogues and the unsaid actually outshone descriptions, rendering them almost pointless.

I had a eureka moment! The haiku is my favorite form of poetry. In a haiku, the message is driven by conciseness and simplicity. Every word counts. This is exactly how I write!

To cement this "discovery", I created my own literary form: the Flashku. Containing between 50 and 100 words, the Flashku is a short piece of flash fiction that draws inspiration from an image and "borrows" seven words from another piece. What makes it unique is the mandatory positive / inspirational twist or resolution at the end.

I like to call the Flashku 'poetic flash fiction', because the limited number of words forces you to think like a haikuist. It is all about showing, and not telling. Descriptions have pretty much no "breathing space".

After a few weeks and a few flashku later, I had finally come to terms with my inability to write descriptions. I had other strengths that had served me well until now. Re-reading my old short stories in that light shut down the last shred of self-critical voice in my head, allowing me to fully appreciate my quirky writing style.

Several of my stories stood out. Many rounds of rewriting and editing later, I decided to include three of them in this book. Another one, What Will Happen Next?, begged to be released as a standalone book.

In Her Own Words is a collection of short stories and flashku told from the point of view of women at different stages in their lives. They deal with universal topics, but are not meant to be just female-centric. People may be very different in most areas, but I believe that we also share common goals and ideals.

Pre-release Review

In Her Own Words By Cendrine Marrouat is a lovely collection of short stories and Flashku, a literary form of flash fiction of her own creation, that visit and revisit the many forms love can take throughout our lives. Immersive, palpable, emotionally intelligent characters and themes make this collection a very enjoyable experience. One for my bookshelves!”  —  Sarah St. Erth
